Winter birding

The cold snap of late 2025/early 2026 has provided some fine winter conditions which proved good for viewing and photographing two migratory species – Fieldfares and Redwings – going about their business, alongside some of the usual residents.

(Technical note: these images have been made with a Canon 55-250mm telephoto lens which is a bit short for birding, so I’ve used some cropping to increase the subject size).

A Fieldfare among the Hawthorn berries:

Which was then joined by a Redwing (lower-right). The camouflage is effective here:

This bush proved popular:

A Redwing fulfilling its description. Both species make rapid, darting flights so capturing this is best described as tricky:

Meanwhile, a Great Tit is a colourful but flitting target:

Robins are more chilled:

Buzzards wheeling overhead:

And coming in to land:
